Dr. Jeff Wilusz
Good Afternoon
Our latest extended break has come to a close, marking the beginning of our sprint towards the year's end. In a recent conversation with my Cohort students, we delved into the age-old debate of quantity versus quality in learning. Amidst our usual banter and amusing anecdotes, we pondered a couple of thought-provoking "what if" scenarios:
What if, in pursuit of knowledge, you placed emphasis on depth rather than breadth?
What if you dedicated more time to immersing yourself in a few select classes rather than breezing through a packed schedule?
As is our custom, we didn't arrive at a definitive answer. However, we did recognize that although a less hectic schedule might seem barren, it could offer enrichment to both mind and life.
With the academic year drawing to a close, it's an opportune moment to encourage your child (or yourself) to reflect on their daily pursuits and discern what truly enriches their lives.
MAP Testing
Our 9th and 10th grade students will be taking their MAP tests on Sunday & Wednesday (4/21 & 4/24). We will be running an adjusted schedule for each of those days. Grade 11 & 12 students will be working with Ms. Kurdi to prepare for their upcoming applications (11) and transition into college/universities (12).
AP Testing
Please note that AP exams will take place May 6-17 2024. Please note that there are exams that will take place over the Easter holiday and on Fridays. The school will be open and ready for the test takers.
You can check this link to view the AP exam schedule.
We hope everyone has a wonderful Eid break, and that our students enjoy their time reconnecting and recharging.
Juniors and seniors engaged together in a fun and productive FLEX session last week. During ‘Ask The Experts’, our seniors, who are now wrapping up the college application process, were the EXPERTS. They were standing behind the tables that corresponded to their expertise, ready to answer juniors’ questions. Juniors tell us that they have learned at least a thing or two from the seniors. They asked them about their experiences and listened to their advice and tips. It was wonderful to see the mentorship and engagement among members of our nurturing community!
The current round of individual junior meetings with Ms. Kurdi is well under way. During this round, each meeting will be followed up with an email to the family for a short update and an invitation for the parents to schedule a meeting as well. All juniors’ parents are encouraged to schedule meetings with Ms. Kurdi for individual conversations about next steps. The parent meetings that took place already have been a great way to continue our partnership in supporting our students.
We had a mini UK university fair on Wednesday with representatives from UCLAN, Kent, Ulster, and Liverpool John Moores. Our high school students were able to get lots of information and ask great questions. Our juniors also got lots of information and asked great questions during FLEX on Thursday when they met with Ms. Kurdi and heard about looking at program content more closely in the UK and Europe. These research tips are going to be very helpful in finding the right fit for our students as well as preparing them for their personal statements and motivation letters.
This week, our seniors had the opportunity to attend some optional senior transition seminars. Mr Wilusz shared some advice on money matters during FLEX on Tuesday. These optional sessions are part of a series aimed at giving our soon-to-be graduates more information about important topics before their transition into life after high school. Upcoming topics include: alcohol and substance awareness, university resources, and sexual health.
