Dr. Jeff Wilusz
I hope you’ve all had a wonderful week. There is a great piece in Education Week making its way around schools once again that really caught my eye. It highlights a shift we are seeing globally: parents are overwhelmingly calling for high school experiences that go beyond the traditional "sit-and-get" academic model. One parent in the survey captured it perfectly, saying, "We need schools to focus on preparing our kids for life, not just tests."
That sentiment hits home because it is exactly what we strive for here at ACS. We know that in today’s rapidly changing job market, being able to memorize facts isn’t the superpower it used to be. Our students need to be adaptable, critical thinkers who can solve problems in real-time.
As we look toward our Learning 2030 goals, we are intentionally moving toward instruction that is "adaptive, authentic, and learner-centered". Here is a quick look at how we are bringing those "real-world" vibes into our High School:
Holistic Excellence: We are committed to ensuring "holistic learning" for every student, making sure they are ready for the world, not just the next exam.
Purposeful Collaboration: Our teachers work in Professional Learning Teams (PLTs) to specifically "remove barriers to learning," ensuring our curriculum remains guaranteed and viable for the future.
Agency and Tenacity: Our vision is to cultivate "agency, agility, and tenacity". Whether it’s through international competitions, artistic showcases, or community service, our students are out there being global explorers.
Empowerment: We want our students to "explore, express, and extend" themselves toward their true passions.
Our goal is to ensure that when an ACS graduate walks across that stage, they aren’t just holding a diploma, they’re holding the confidence to apply everything they’ve learned to the real world.
Junior/Senior Prom - The Prom Committee is excited to announce that Prom will be held on the 16th of April from 7-9:30 at Segreta in the St. Regis Hotel. The theme is Secret Garden, so people can wear any dress or suit as long as it is correlated with the theme.
The Prom Committee will be selling tickets every day in the LC during lunch from 1 March until 15 April. Tickets will cost 65 JD, and are only open to 11th and 12th graders. Seniors can invite students from younger grades as their plus one as well as people from outside of ACS, provided that they give I.D. in advance. As prom is a school event, we will be filtering songs, checking bags, and making sure that there is no alcohol.
Our team kindly asks for you to encourage your children to attend so we can have the best Prom possible!
Lastly, we wanted to bring to your attention an annual tradition that has occurred after the prom in the past, known as the "post-prom" event. Please be aware that this event is not in any way associated with ACS, and we do not endorse or condone it.
In previous years, students have organized this independent event, selling tickets off-campus at an additional cost. The event typically extends into the early morning and includes an open bar. We want to emphasize that ACS neither promotes nor supports the "post-prom" event.
We strongly encourage you to have an open conversation with your children before giving them permission to attend any such event. It's essential for everyone to be well-informed about the nature of the activities and potential risks associated with independent post-prom events.
If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to reach out to us. Your cooperation and support are crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of our students.
Senior Sunrise (reminder) - On February 3, the Senior Council is hosting its annual Senior Sunrise, a meaningful rite of passage for the Class of 2026. This event is designed to bring the entire grade together to bond and build class spirit before they enter their final semester. The event begins at 7:00 AM on the field. A full breakfast that includes pancakes, manaeesh, coffee, and juice will be provided. Please remind your seniors to dress warmly for the cold morning weather!
Ramadan Hours & HS Schedule - As we approach the Holy Month of Ramadan, our school day will shift to 8:30 AM – 2:30 PM for all students. To ensure we make the most of our time together, we have modified the daily schedule for High School. You can find the updated class timings for Ramadan here:
College Counseling Program
Conversations continue around course selections for next year. Students are still attending sessions with subject-area teachers as well as counselors to make sure they understand all the options and are building four-year plans with the plethora of resources available to them. Parents are reminded that they are always welcome to schedule counselor meetings as well. Grades 9&10 parents with Ms. Kate (ktouchtonleonard@acsamman.edu.jo) and Grades 11&12 with Ms. Kurdi (rkurdi@acsamman.edu.jo).
Seniors
Final credit checks towards graduation were underway this week. We wish all our seniors the very best in their last semester of school. Congrats, Class of 2026, on all the offers of acceptance that are continuing to roll in!
Juniors
Stay in touch: Juniors are continuing to schedule their own one-on-one meetings with Ms. Kurdi, via Google Calendar, to make course selection decisions for their senior year.
Mark your calendars: We hosted a university fair this week, and we have several more visits in store! ALL students are encouraged to talk to university representatives who have come a long way to help you understand your options. Take advantage of the opportunities and ask those great questions!

Getting Through the February Fog
Let’s be real: February in Amman can feel like a marathon where someone forgot to put out the water stations. The initial "new semester" energy has faded, the weather is still a bit moody, and the academic pressure is starting to ramp up.
When things get heavy, the first thing we usually sacrifice is the one thing our brain actually needs to stay afloat: Sleep.
The Science of the “Zzzs”: I’ve said it many times before, but let’s look at the numbers for where you are right now, and what you need:
Ages 14-18: your brain requires 8-10hrs of sleep to function at “Peak Performance.”
The reality: most highschoolers are currently running on 5 or 6 hrs.
Think of your brain like a phone. If you only ever charge it to 60%, it’s going to hit "Low Power Mode" by lunchtime. In humans, "Low Power Mode" looks like irritability, brain fog, and a much higher sensitivity to social stress. Everything feels harder when you’re exhausted.
The Balance Myth: "Balance" doesn't mean spending exactly equal time on math, friends, and sleep. It means listening to your internal battery. If you’re staying up until 2:00 AM to study for one test, you’re actually making it harder for your brain to remember that information. Sleep is when your brain moves what you learned from "temporary storage" to "permanent memory." No sleep = no storage.
Three Small Shifts for Better Balance:
The Digital Sunset: Try to put your phone in "Do Not Disturb" mode 30 minutes before you want to be asleep. That blue light tells your brain it's morning in the middle of the desert—it's confusing your internal clock.
The "Social Jetlag" Rule: Try not to sleep in too late on Fridays and Saturdays. Shifting your schedule by more than 2 hours "jetlags" your brain, making Sunday morning feel like a nightmare.
Micro-Breaks: Between classes or study sessions, take 2 minutes to breathe or stretch.
You don't have to do it all perfectly. You just have to be a little kinder to your future self by getting that extra hour of rest tonight.
