Ms. Molly Nielsen
Dear MS Families,
The next few weeks are going to feel a little discombobulated with MAP testing and long weekends. Please check the ACS school calendar to stay updated. With this inconsistency please ensure there are some consistent routines for your middle schooler. Most importantly - sleep! We strongly encourage your child to keep with their normal sleep routines during those long weekends to set them up for smooth transitions in and out of school.
MAP Test Starts Next Week!
MAP is not an assessment that your child can study or prepare for. To help them do their best, please ensure your child gets plenty of rest and eats a healthy breakfast. You can also help your child by not stressing about this testing experience. It is not a high-stakes assessment; the children have no reason to feel stressed about their performance. After all students have completed the tests, you will receive information about your child’s performance on the MAP assessment. For more about the MAP assessment, please click on the MAP Family Toolkit.
MAP Testing Schedule
Hello Departing Families,
Myself and Ms. Molly officially invite you to our transition workshop happening on Sunday. All the details can be found below and we hope you consider joining us. There will be snacks provided.
Over the past few months, the Female Empowerment Group has conducted research, interviews, and hosted tournaments to promote female participation in sports. With a focus on lunchtime activities, they have made it convenient for everyone to participate and cheer on their peers.
They were divided into four teams and gathered insights on perceptions of females in sports. Last Thursday, they kicked off their initiative with a kickball tournament, and this week, they are hosting volleyball and kickball tournaments. Each week, two different houses compete against each other. Last week Orange and Blue competed in kickball, and this week it will be Red vs. Green for kickball and Orange vs. Blue for volleyball.
Together, they are trying to build a community where everyone has the opportunity to shine and succeed.
The Literacy Action Explore group has been sorting through the middle school classroom libraries, as well as our middle school book room-- this is a huge service to the English department! Along with organizing, labeling, and documenting the school's collection of books, the group has also identified and collected books that could be donated. Last week, we took a trip to the Collateral Repair Project to donate several boxes of books and tour the facilities to gain a better understanding of the many ways in which this community organization serves refugee families.
It was a great trip!
Dear Parents,
Save the Date! Thursday, May 9th from 6:00 - 8:00pm (or 8:30 for 8th graders) is our final Middle School Social of the year--the Spring Dance. Below are a few key pieces of information for those students who are planning to attend (and a special note, at the end, for you):
First: Students must have bought a ticket ahead of time to enter the Social. Tickets are available in Mrs. VanCleave's Room (404) from Monday, April 29 through the end of the day on Tuesday, May 7th. (3:05 p.m.).
Second: Unless actively involved in Scorpion Council, students are expected to leave school after school or their After-School Activity and return to the Dance at approximately 6:00.
Third: The Social is a fun time for students to interact; we expect them to continue to demonstrate the respectful behavior that we see at school. Unless specially noted, all school rules remain in force.
Fourth: The Social is only two hours long for 6th and 7th graders, and two and a half hours for 8th graders. As such, we ask students to stay for the entire time. Parents may begin picking up their Middle Schoolers at 7:45 p.m.
Fifth: Please note that this is a Middle School semi-formal event: as such, we ask students to dress one level nicer than the way they might dress for school. It’s an opportunity to have fun and “dress up” a bit. Having said that, fancy dresses or suits are not required (or even expected), and in the past, many have opted for tennis shoes along with nicer clothes in order to continue to be comfortable throughout the night.
Finally: we recognize that Thursday night traffic is NOT ideal. So we will again open up a space set aside for MS Parents. We will have coffee, tea, and cookies available for you. Come read, chat, work--whatever you want to do in order to avoid additional driving in Thursday evening traffic!
If you have additional questions, feel free to contact Molly VanCleave or Sarah Sisco, Scorpion Council Advisors (mvancleave@acsamman.edu.jo ssisco@acsamman.edu.jo).
