Ms. Molly Nielsen
Dear MS Families,
On Sunday, April 21, our school-wide counseling team hosted a transition night workshop for families departing ACS at the end of the year. It was an excellent opportunity for families to come together and think intentionally about how they would wrap up their time in Amman and at ACS. Families thought through places they want to visit one more time, ways to say goodbye to important people, routines or structures needed in their new place to make it feel like home, and all the emotions and uncertainties that come with transition.
We look forward to continuing this tradition, and I want to thank our ACS counseling team for their leadership in this initiative and all the families who joined us.
Research is changing as data continues to roll in around pre-teens and their social media use. Please join me in a virtual call to discuss how we can work together as a community to ensure children have the boundaries and support they need to navigate the complexities of social media and their development.
When: Monday, April 29 at 8:30 am.
Where: Click The Link
I will send the recording and slides in next weeks WGO for families unable to attend.
One of the best ways to support your child’s development and empathy building in middle school is to support them looking through different perspectives, especially in times of anger and conflict. Here is a comprehensive list to support you at home.
Personal Reflection:
"How do you think the other person is feeling right now?"
"What do you think might be going on in their life that's causing them to react this way?"
Role Reversal:
"Imagine if you were in their shoes, how would you want someone to respond to you?"
"What would you do differently if you were the one experiencing what they are going through?"
Consequences Consideration:
"When we react angrily, how might it affect the other person?"
"What could be the consequences of not considering the other person's feelings?"
Empathy Exercises:
"Let's try to think about a time when we felt similar to what they're feeling now. How did it feel?"
"How can we show that we understand and care about what they're going through?"
Seeing the Bigger Picture:
"What do you think might be the reasons behind their actions or words?"
"Sometimes people behave in certain ways because of things we might not know about. What could those things be?"
Problem-Solving:
"How can we address this situation in a way that considers both your feelings and theirs?"
"What compromises or solutions can we come up with that satisfy both sides?"
Communication Skills:
"How can we express our own feelings and needs while also listening to theirs?"
"What words or actions can we use to show that we understand and respect their perspective?"
Learning from Experience:
"What have you learned from past conflicts or disagreements?"
"How can we apply what we've learned to handle this situation differently?"
Cultural and Social Awareness:
"Different people have different backgrounds and experiences that shape how they see the world. How might this apply in this situation?"
"What cultural or social factors might be influencing their behavior?"
Positive Reinforcement:
"When you're able to consider someone else's perspective, how does it usually improve the situation?"
"Let's reflect on times when understanding someone else's perspective led to a positive outcome."
Last week, the French B students had the chance to go on a field trip to learn about traditional French breakfast and pastries, and experience the unique atmosphere of a Parisian-style cafe right here in Paul Amman.
Dear Parents,
Save the Date! Thursday, May 9th from 6:00 - 8:00pm (or 8:30 for 8th graders) is our final Middle School Social of the year--the Spring Dance. Below are a few key pieces of information for those students who are planning to attend (and a special note, at the end, for you):
Scorpion Council has been looking for ways to use our time, resources, and events to support the wider community. As such, we have invited Collateral Repair’s Hope Workshop to come sell some of their creations at our event. Students are invited to bring additional money in order to purchase items
First: Students must have bought a ticket ahead of time to enter the Social.
Cost of ticket is 10 JDs. This covers entrance, food, and drink and provides each student with a 2 JD voucher for CRP’s Hope Workshop, which will be selling at the event.
Tickets are available in Mrs. VanCleave's Room (404) from Monday, April 29 through the end of the day Tuesday, May 7th. (3:05 p.m.).
Second: Unless actively involved in Scorpion Council, students are expected to leave school after school or their After-School Activity and return to the Dance at approximately 6:00.
Third: The Social is a fun time for students to interact; we expect them to continue to demonstrate the respectful behavior that we see at school. Unless specially noted, all school rules remain in force.
Fourth: The Social is only two hours long for 6th and 7th graders, and two and a half hours for 8th graders. As such, we ask students to stay for the entire time. Parents may begin picking up their Middle Schoolers at 7:45 p.m.
Fifth: Please note that this is a Middle School semi-formal event: as such, we ask students to dress one level nicer than the way they might dress for school. It’s an opportunity to have fun and “dress up” a bit. Having said that, fancy dresses or suits are not required (or even expected), and in the past, many have opted for tennis shoes along with nicer clothes in order to continue to be comfortable throughout the night.
Finally: we recognize that Thursday night traffic is NOT ideal. So we will again open up a space set aside for MS Parents. We will have coffee, tea, and cookies available for you. Come read, chat, work--whatever you want to do in order to avoid additional driving in Thursday evening traffic!
In addition, if you would be interested in perusing the items from CRP’s Hope Workshop, you also are invited to shop.
If you have additional questions, feel free to contact Molly VanCleave or Sarah Sisco, Scorpion Council Advisors (mvancleave@acsamman.edu.jo ssisco@acsamman.edu.jo).
Remind your student how to access ebooks remotely from anywhere they may travel by reviewing this slideshow!
Activity Busing Notice:
Please note that if you are not registered for the 4:15 or 4:45 and have not spoken to Ms. Rawand/Mr. Chip before 12 pm you WILL NOT be allowed to take the bus home that day.
