Ms. Michelle Alzamora
As the final weeks of the school year approach, we are excited to continue our tradition of supporting our students as they prepare for upcoming transitions. Next Thursday, May 29th, we will be holding our annual Fly-Up Day. This engaging experience provides a wonderful opportunity for our students to connect with their next grade level teachers, explore their future classrooms, and gain valuable insights into what the new academic year will hold. This firsthand preview helps to alleviate anxieties and build excitement for the next step in their learning journey at ACS.
Recognizing that transitions can bring a mix of emotions, we are also thoughtfully planning for our students who will be moving to new schools at the end of this academic year. During the Fly-Up Day, these students can participate in developmentally appropriate activities specifically designed to support their transition to a new school community.
In our vibrant international community, we understand that transitions are a frequent experience for many of our families. Whether it's moving to a new grade level within ACS or embarking on a move to a new school in Amman or another part of the world, these shifts require resilience and adaptability. Here are a few tips to support your child through any upcoming transition:
Open Communication is Key: Encourage your child to talk about their feelings, both positive and apprehensive. Listen attentively and validate their emotions.
Focus on the Positives: Help your child identify exciting aspects of the upcoming change, whether it's new learning opportunities, new friendships, or a new environment.
Gather Information Together: If transitioning to a new school, involve your child in learning about it. Look at the school's website, photos, or any introductory materials together. If possible, arrange a visit.
Maintain Familiar Routines: During times of change, maintaining familiar routines at home can provide a sense of stability and security.
Connect with Others: Encourage your child to stay connected with friends who are also moving or to reach out to new classmates if possible. For those staying at ACS, remind them that they will see their current friends in the hallways and at activities.
Acknowledge and Celebrate the Past: Take time to acknowledge and celebrate your child's experiences and accomplishments in their current grade or school. This helps provide closure and a sense of pride.
Reassure and Be Patient: Remind your child that it's okay to feel a range of emotions and that you will be there to support them every step of the way. Be patient as they adjust to their new circumstances.
Fly-Up Day is just one of the ways we at ACS strive to create a smooth and positive transition for all our students. By working together, we can empower them to embrace these changes with confidence and excitement.
Yours,
Michelle Alzamora
With summer upon us, it is a good time to remember to send sun protection for your children to school. Students are encouraged to bring a hat for recess and PE. You might also want to send in a bottle of sunscreen, and teachers can remind children to reapply before heading outside.
