Ms. Michelle Alzamora
Dear Parents,
The past few weeks I have been sharing information about our standards. This week I am sharing a little bit about our science standards.
Science is all around us, from the tiny microbes in our gut to the vastness of the universe. At ACS, we ignite curiosity and nurture a love for science through the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). But what exactly are these standards, and how do they benefit your child's learning?
Think Beyond Textbooks
Unlike traditional science programs focused on memorizing facts, the NGSS emphasize a deeper understanding and application of scientific concepts. This hands-on, inquiry-based approach cultivates critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills. These are skills that students will use across all disciplines.
The NGSS are built on three key pillars
Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCIs): These are the big ideas of science, like the structure and function of living things, the interactions of matter and energy, and the history of Earth.
Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs): These are the skills scientists use, like asking questions, designing experiments, analyzing data, and communicating findings.
Crosscutting Concepts (CCCs): These are the big ideas that connect different scientific disciplines, like patterns, cause and effect, and systems thinking.
Engaging All Learners
The NGSS standards are designed for all learners, regardless of their background or interests. They offer flexibility for teachers to tailor lessons to different learning styles and abilities. This ensures that every child has the opportunity to explore science, ask questions, and develop a love for discovery. Our teachers work together to write units that encourage students to think like scientists.
Connecting with Your Child
Wondering how you can support your child's science journey? Here are some tips:
Ask questions: Encourage your child to share what they're learning and ask questions about their projects and experiments.
Engage in science together: Visit museums, conduct simple experiments at home, or even watch science documentaries together.
Connect with teachers: Don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher for more information about specific NGSS standards or projects.
Beyond the Classroom
The NGSS go beyond traditional science concepts, preparing students for real-world challenges. They learn to think critically, solve problems creatively, and communicate effectively – skills essential for success in any field. By embracing the NGSS, we are equipping our children with the tools they need to become lifelong learners and responsible citizens in an ever-changing world.
Let's spark curiosity and ignite a passion for science in our children together!
Yours,
Michelle
Hello families,
Thank you for participating in our ASA's (After school activities) in session 1. As of Thursday, Nov. 14th please note that all ASA's for session one have been completed. Registration for session two is open on PowerSchool and will close Thursday, November 21st @ 9am.
Please note session two runs from December 2nd - February 13th
Please note that we are making a change to our rainy weather guidelines. We believe that outdoor play is essential for children's physical and mental health, so we want to provide opportunities for students to go outside as much as possible, even on rainy days.
To maximize outdoor play time, we ask that you please send your child to school with weather-appropriate gear, including:
Raincoat or poncho
Rain boots or waterproof shoes
Hat
We will only cancel outdoor recess if weather conditions are deemed unsafe, such lightning, thunderstorms, and extremely slippery surfaces.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping us provide the best possible learning environment for your child.
Thank you to Junia and Jenna, 5th grade students, for providing us with this update:
In our Reading for Refugees project we were working on raising money for CRP to help refugees. CRP is an organization that helps refugees in Jordan. Reading for refugees is a great project because it lets us read for a good cause. In Reading for Refugees we were working on helping CRP provide more books and education for people who don’t have good education. This program was a success this semester because we earned 4,468 JD and will donate it to CRP. The way it worked was we would give each person a pamphlet with an explanation of what we were doing, a reading log, and a pledge form for your sponsors. We hope to be able to participate in this project next semester, and we hope this will continue for the more years ahead . Thank you to anyone who participated.
Updated Resource Webpage - Discussion ideas and coping strategies when approaching unfairness, violence, crime and war with your child.
Talking about topics like unfairness, violence, crime and war can be hard. You might not know what to say in the moment. Being ready for these talks can help. Please check out the resources on this page and let us know how we can support you!

The ES counseling department is launching a series of fun challenges designed to help students grow their social and emotional skills and to help families continue to build strong connections at home. Participation is completely optional, but we’d love for you to join in!
Kicking off just in time for American Thanksgiving, our first challenge is the 21-Day Family Gratitude Challenge!
Here’s how it works:
Download and print the challenge sheet (or grab one from Ms. Hayley or Mr. Tim’s office).
Hang it somewhere at home.
Each day, pick a gratitude prompt, discuss it as a family, and color in the space on the sheet.
If your family completes all 21 days, have your child(ren) bring the sheet back to one of the counselors for a special prize!
Research shows that practicing gratitude has powerful benefits for children. It helps improve their overall well-being by boosting happiness, reducing stress, and increasing resilience. Grateful children tend to have stronger relationships, a more positive attitude, and greater empathy for others. Practicing gratitude together as a family strengthens bonds and creates a positive, supportive home environment. Let’s celebrate gratitude together this season!
Celebrate World Kindness Day with inspiring stories! This November 13th, explore our read-aloud choice board filled with heartwarming tales of good deeds and community heroes. Let’s spread kindness and make the world a brighter place!
