Ms. Michelle Alzamora
Dear Families,
In the past few weeks I have shared about assessments that we use to plan for student learning. This week, I would like to share a little about one of our common math assessments. .To better understand where our students are in relation to math foundational skills, we utilize the Forefront Math Screeners with all students in K- grade 2, all new students, and selected students in grades 3-5.
The Forefront Math Screeners help us identify any gaps in students' knowledge through an interview-style assessment. When we discover that a student needs additional support in math, we implement a research-based math intervention program, Bridges Interventions. This program is designed to close these gaps and provide students with the necessary tools to succeed in mathematics.
We have been using Forefront Screeners and Bridges Interventions for the past four years. Additionally, two years ago, we adopted a new math curriculum that has had a positive impact on our students' mathematical thinking. We believe that this approach is helping our students develop a deeper understanding of mathematics and preparing them for future success. As a result of these combined efforts, we have a decline in the number of students requiring math interventions and a corresponding increase in our MAP math scores.
Here are a few tips for how you can support your child's mathematical development at home:
Encourage exploration and curiosity: Ask your child questions about the world around them and encourage them to find mathematical patterns and relationships. For example, you could ask them to count the number of windows in your house or measure the length of their favorite toy.
Provide opportunities for hands-on learning: Play games that involve math, such as board games, card games, or dice games. You can also bake, cook, or do other activities that involve measurement and problem-solving.
Talk about math in everyday life: Point out examples of math in your daily routine, such as when you calculate the cost of groceries or figure out how much gas you need to put in your car.
By following these tips, you can help your child develop a strong foundation in mathematics and set them up for success in school and beyond.
Thank you for your continued support.
Yours,
Michelle

A group of Grade 4 and 5 students had a fantastic day on August 29th learning the skills to become effective peer mediators. The retreat focused on understanding mediation steps, knowing when to report to adults, and mastering conflict-resolution techniques. Through role-playing various scenarios, our young mediators demonstrated their enthusiasm and empathy. We're thrilled to have such a dedicated group of students kick off our Scorpion Solvers program!

Students will have their indiviual photos taken for the Yearbook the week of September 16th. Your child's class teacher will let you know which day your child will have their photo taken in their communication with you next week.
This week our grades 2-5 students took the Language portion of the MAP assessment. In the next two weeks students will take the Reading and Math sections. Your child’s teacher will share the exact days that your child is taking the assessment.
The MAP assessments provide us with external data that compares your child’s performance with a set of recognized standards. Because the assessment is adaptive, we are able to gather information about children outside of the constraints of grade level bands.
This is not an assessment that your child can study for. In order to help her or him do their very best, please ensure that your child gets plenty of rest and eats a healthy breakfast. You can also help your child by not making a big deal about this testing experience. It is not a high stakes assessment and the children have no reason to feel stressed about their performance. Your child’s teachers will share the exact dates that the students in their class are taking each of the three components of the assessment.
You will receive information about your child’s performance on the MAP assessment after all students have completed the tests. For more about the MAP assessment, you can jump to the MAP Family Toolkit. As a school, we look at the results of the MAP assessments to help us understand each learner as well as our programs. Our classroom teachers will spend time together looking at MAP results in conjunction with other pieces of data about learning. As administrators, we use multiple data points (including MAP) over time to help us understand where our students are doing well and where we might consider making programmatic changes.
We invite you to join us on October 28 at 8:15 in the morning for a special MAP Parent Chat. This presentation will be recorded for parents that are not able to join us.
Chances are your child's emotions fluctuate quite often! Over time, this may make you feel stuck as a parent around how to support your child and yourself in addressing emotional outbursts. It is taxing work. To possibly help, we've added another tool to our ES Counseling Website - Check out these Tools to Try posters you can print and hang in your home to remind yourself and family members that there are tools you can use. The tools are best used together, as a family - not just for the kids!
We are here and happy to support you if you have any questions or would like to discuss ways to create a calmer home environment.
