Ms. Joelle Basnight
Happy Valentines Day and Happy Long Weekend! As you know, we have a long weekend coming up. As such, classes will be suspended on Sunday and Monday, February 16 and 17. Please refer to the campus access hours in the all-school section below.
There have been some questions about Ramadan hours for this academic year. You can see from our Annual Calendar that our published hours are 9:00 am - 3:00 pm (scroll to the key at the bottom). We received a concern about this last year and collected data to track if our hours impacted commuting. We did not find the data pointed to a change. We will track data again this year before confirming times for next year. Should the hours change for 25/26, we will reflect them on the published calendar.
ACS's Strategic Approach to Generative AI
Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) is rapidly transforming the world around us, and education is no exception. At ACS we recognize the potential of GAI to enhance teaching and learning, and we are committed to integrating this technology thoughtfully and responsibly. Our Strategic Committee on GAI has developed a comprehensive approach to ensure that GAI is used ethically and effectively in our classrooms.
What is GAI?
Generative AI refers to a type of artificial intelligence that can create new content, ranging from text and images to music and even code. It learns from vast amounts of existing data and then generates original content based on that learning. Think of it like a student who has read a library full of books and can now write their own stories.
Our Commitment:
Our school is committed to the ethical and responsible integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) into our educational practices. These guidelines aim to protect student and staff data privacy while enhancing teaching and learning outcomes. We will ensure that all GAI tools are vetted for compliance with our educational goals, and parents will be informed about how these tools will be used in the classroom.
The implementation of GAI will focus on promoting equitable access to resources, fostering GAI literacy among students and staff, and encouraging open dialogue within our community. By embracing GAI, we aim to prepare our students for a future enriched by technology while maintaining our core values of community, empowerment, and growth.
Family Handbook Language: Understanding GAI in Our School
To provide clarity and transparency for our families, the following language will be incorporated into our family handbook for the 2025-2026 school year:
As our school embraces the integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) into the educational experience, we aim to provide clear guidelines to ensure its ethical and responsible use. These guidelines are designed to protect student and staff data privacy while enhancing learning outcomes and fostering a safe and supportive environment for all.
Informed Use: Parents will have access to information about the adopted GAI applications used in the classroom, including their purpose and data handling practices.
Vetting and Approval: Adopted GAI tools must be approved by our GAI Committee, which evaluates each tool based on criteria such as data privacy, security, alignment with educational goals, and potential benefits versus risks.
Classroom Oversight: Teachers will guide and monitor student use of GAI tools in school, providing specific guidelines for responsible use outside of school depending on assignment intentions. Students may not use GAI outside of the parameters that are set by their teachers. (See Acceptable Help Guidelines)
Responsible Use: Students are expected to handle data ethically, avoid plagiarism by properly citing sources, verify information accuracy from GAI outputs, and report any incidents.
Ongoing Education: We are committed to educating students, staff, and families about the capabilities and limitations of GAI, promoting digital citizenship, and fostering critical thinking skills necessary for navigating GAI-generated content responsibly.
By adhering to these guidelines, we can collectively harness the potential of GAI to enhance learning while ensuring a safe and equitable educational environment.
How Can You Support Your Children?
Educate yourself: Understanding GAI is the first step. Explore resources like Common Sense Media to learn more about AI and its implications for kids.
Talk to your children: Discuss GAI with your kids, explaining what it is and its potential benefits and risks. Encourage them to be curious but also cautious.
Promote critical thinking: Teach your children to evaluate information, especially from AI sources. Encourage them to ask questions and cross-check facts.
Emphasize ethical use: Discuss the importance of using GAI responsibly, including respecting copyright and avoiding plagiarism.
Set boundaries: Establish clear guidelines for GAI use, including time limits and appropriate content.
Explore together: Try out some GAI tools with your children to understand how they work and have open conversations about their experiences.
Stay informed: Keep up with the latest developments in GAI and adjust your approach as needed.
Check out Common Sense Media. This website offers valuable resources for parents on navigating the digital world, including information about AI.
We believe that this proactive and collaborative approach to GAI will empower our students to become responsible digital citizens and prepare them for success in a rapidly evolving world.
