Ms. Michelle Alzamora
Last week, we introduced our Wellbeing Series with a look at the importance of balance. Over the next few weeks, we will highlight one area at a time, starting with sleep.
Quality sleep is one of the most important factors in a child’s wellbeing. The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommends that elementary-aged children get between 9 and 12 hours of sleep each night. Rested children are better able to focus in class, solve problems, regulate emotions, and build positive friendships. Unfortunately, even small amounts of lost sleep can affect attention, behavior, and learning.
Why Sleep Matters
Focus and Learning: During sleep, the brain processes new information and strengthens memory.
Emotional Wellbeing: Consistent rest helps children manage emotions and reduce stress.
Physical Health: Sleep supports growth, immune function, and overall energy.
Family Tips for Better Sleep
Create a Consistent Schedule: Keep regular bedtimes and wake-up times, even on weekends.
Build a Calming Routine: Activities like a warm bath, reading, or listening to soft music signal that it’s time to rest.
Limit Screens Before Bed: Blue light from devices can disrupt the body’s natural sleep cycle. Try to switch off screens at least 30 minutes before bedtime.
Set a Restful Environment: Keep bedrooms cool, quiet, and dark to support deeper sleep.
When children arrive at school well rested, they are more prepared to engage, learn, and grow. By working together to build strong sleep routines, we can help every child feel ready to thrive each day.
Warmly,
The ES Admin Team
Every school day begins with a Morning Meeting, a routine that helps students feel welcomed, connected, and ready to learn. During this time, classes gather to greet one another, share ideas, and build community through short activities. Morning Meetings not only set a positive tone for the day but also teach important skills such as listening, empathy, and collaboration. Families can ask their children what greeting or activity they enjoyed in Morning Meeting to spark meaningful conversations at home.
In addition to classroom meetings, our entire elementary school gathers on Thursday mornings for an all-school Morning Meeting. Each class has the opportunity to lead once during the year, giving students the chance to share their voices, celebrate learning, and strengthen our sense of community. We hope you will join us when it is your child’s turn to present!
Welcome to all our new students and families!
It has been a joy getting to know your children over these first two weeks of school and to see them settling into their new spaces and building connections.
We’d also love to share with you a video that was shown at our Back to School Morning Meeting. In it, last year’s leaving students offer words of wisdom and advice for our newest scorpions... and there’s even a special cameo from our beloved ES mascot, Wadi! This video gives you a glimpse of the spirit of ACS, and we hope that before long, your family will feel right at home here too.
KG students exploring the important roles in our ACS family!
This September, the library partnered with our art teachers to celebrate International Dot Day, inspired by Peter H. Reynolds’ book The Dot. Students in Grades K-2 explored the power of creativity and a growth mindset, learning that small beginnings can lead to big ideas. Miss. Deena read the book to the students, then they brought the message to life in art class by creating their own unique “dots” and proudly making their mark!
Family Tech Planners: Use these tech planners to help your kids think through important questions around tech use: What will I do? How much time will I spend? Am I making thoughtful choices?
