Dr. Jeff Wilusz
After a long week, I’d like to share some insights from an educational article titled "Creating Safe Learning Environments for Students." The article emphasizes the importance of fostering a secure and supportive atmosphere where our students can thrive.
Published in the September 2023 issue of Education Today, the piece highlights the critical role parents and guardians play in helping create a safe learning space for students. As our teenagers navigate the challenges of high school, it is essential that they feel supported and protected to reach their full potential.
A key point from the article is the value of open and honest communication. It encourages parents to engage in meaningful discussions with their children about school experiences, concerns, and challenges. Early identification of potential issues through these conversations allows us to address them proactively.
The article also stresses the importance of fostering empathy and inclusivity. By modeling these values as parents, we help our students grow into compassionate and accepting individuals. This not only contributes to a safer school environment but also promotes their emotional well-being.
Let’s continue to work together in creating a supportive and nurturing space for our high school students. By maintaining open dialogue, staying involved, and promoting inclusivity, we can ensure our children flourish academically, emotionally, and socially during these formative years.
MAP Reports
MAP reports for students in grades 2-10 will be available in PowerSchool on the afternoon of October 10th. We will provide a full tutorial with a focus on how to read MAP reports and how this data helps to inform our teaching and learning at ACS.
College Counseling Program
The EduCanada fair visited our school on Wednesday, and what a turn out! There was a lot of interest across grade levels in High School with some parents attending as well. We encourage parent attendance at all our university visits and fairs, and we’d like to remind parents that they are welcome to ask for university contact information or to try to set up individual appointments with them, where possible. The visit from IE University was also very well-received as our attendees filled up the room and got a lot of first hand information and updates. We have lots of visits and fairs lined up in September and October, and you can visit our College Counseling website for the most up-to-date visits schedule as well as a lot more college information.
As seniors continue to work on their applications during designated FLEX sessions, they are also meeting with Ms. Ruba individually. Of course, they are all welcome to pop in whenever they are free to ask questions or just chat. The first approaching deadlines are mid October for some of the Early applications in the US and for Oxbridge and medicine in the UK. Another gentle reminder: US citizens and their families are reminded to complete the FAFSA.
Got more college questions? Ask Ms. Kurdi directly (rkurdi@acsamman.edu.jo), or schedule a meeting by emailing Ms. Ellen (ehindeleh@acsamman.edu.jo).

Social/Emotional Counseling Program
This week, I would like to provide some information about my background as well as my theoretical grounding in my social-emotional work with HS students.
As you know, I work with students in a variety of contexts, specifically:
General One-on-One Check-Ins regarding how academics and friendships/relationships are going.
Issue-Focused Groups: these are groups created in response to needs based on what students might be experiencing like study skills/executive skills lessons, friendship group challenges, etc.
Grade-Level Lessons: these focus on academic advising issues like tracking credits and extracurricular activities, selecting courses, and, social emotional issues like the mental health Q&A and suicide awarness and prevention lessons conducted in Health class last week.
In-Depth, Short-Term One-on-One Interventions: these are a set of time-bound meetings I have with a student who might be struggling in a specific arena that needs focused attention.
One strategy that I use in short-term interventions is grounded in cognitive behavioral strategies. The cognitive-behavioral model looks at the influence and interactions between thoughts, behaviors, and mood.
