Dr. Jeff Wilusz
Grading and reporting often carry weight (for students, teachers, and parents alike), because they touch on how we understand progress, growth, and achievement. With that in mind, the HS is putting greater emphasis on communicating clearly and consistently how learning is assessed and reported this year. While not a change in practice, we are essentially trying to act as a restaurant with an open kitchen, where diners can watch the chefs cook, yet nothing changes in the recipes, but the process becomes visible, which builds trust and confidence.
This is part of a broader, ongoing strategy to remove barriers to learning and strengthen transparency in all areas of the high school experience. By aligning classroom practice more visibly with what’s outlined in our handbook and ensuring students understand how their performance connects to clear standards, we’re working to make grading less confusing, more consistent, and ultimately more supportive of learning.
It’s also opening up better conversations between students and teachers: How do I know where I am in my learning? What’s the next step? What does success look like, and how do I get there?
We’ll begin meeting with students by grade level next week in a “Town Hall” format to allow for open dialogue and any questions kids may have. We also plan to host an online parent conversation on Wednesday, October 1st at 4:30 p.m. to keep the dialogue open and centered on your children's learning. If you are unable to attend, do not worry, we will be recording it and posting it on the WGO. Looking forward to seeing you there!
We invite you to participate in the Fall 2025 Parent-Teacher Conferences on October 16. There are no classes for students on this date.
Please understand that the PowerSchool sign-up process applies only to Elementary homeroom, Learning Support, Counselor, and Arabic conferences.
In High School, we encourage your child to join you during PTC, as this is a great opportunity to assist them in taking responsibility for their own learning.
High School parents do not need to meet with Cohort advisors.

College Counseling Program
This week has been a busy and exciting one in the world of college counseling! Our students had the chance to engage with two college fairs, three university presentations, and two university workshops. These visits are so much more than events on the calendar—they are opportunities for our students to ask thoughtful questions, gather first-hand information, and make meaningful connections with university representatives who know their institutions best.
For our seniors, the timing could not be better. With applications in full swing, these interactions provide insight that helps refine their lists, strengthen essays, and give them confidence in the choices ahead. Juniors and sophomores also benefit, as they begin to picture the wide range of possibilities waiting for them after graduation. Parents are always encouraged to join, and they are encouraged to remind their students to attend.
Another gentle reminder: US citizens and their families are reminded to complete the FAFSA.
In our effort to support student and parent needs, we are consolidating resources as much as possible. We will be shifting resources and information from the college counseling website to the Maia platform, thereby phasing out the college counseling website. We appreciate your patience during this transition period and encourage you to login to Maia to access a plethora of resources. Juniors, seniors and their parents who are seeking specific advice or clarification are welcome to reach out to Ms. Kurdi directly.
