Dr. Jeff Wilusz
A couple of weeks ago I supplied you all with the first three keys to a successful year. I had to do my best to fight off the parent community in order to keep the reveal for today and not let the cat out of the bag early. Here are the four remaining keys to a successful school year:
Go to the source
Coffee shop conversations have a way of twisting otherwise reasonable actions into bizarre stories of abuse. I think it’s the caffeine. A group of people talking about an absent “other” will never have the real story. It is remarkable how many times this comes to cause problems. The fourth key to a successful year is practically a corollary of the third key (which was communication) – go to the source of an issue and talk to them. You can save yourself considerable anguish and possibly resolve a problem.
Choose your attitude
You wake up every morning with choices. You decide what to wear, what to listen to, what to eat but many of us forget that we can choose our attitude also. Choose this well because your attitude is contagious. It is amazing how positive people light up a room. Get enough of these positively-minded folks together and you can create a high school. Well, a high school that you want your child to be a part of. We’ll do our best to do this and hope you’ll do the same.
Be there and be prepared
Woody Allen is attributed with saying that 90% of success is just showing up. While I think his percentage may be off, I’m fairly certain that there is a lot of truth to the statement. School at ACS is largely experiential: you have to be here to get the benefits from it. We don’t think for a moment that learning is confined to the school walls, but the real benefits and solidifying learning does happen at school and we need your child to be here. Our school calendar is published early (and often!) so that you can plan your holidays accordingly.
Keep your sense of humor
Life and raising children is a serious business and there is nothing more serious than keeping your sense of humor. “No one gets out of here alive” is a familiar bumper sticker and while it may not raise a chuckle it reminds me to keep things in perspective. Life isn’t always funny and sometimes you need to look hard for the humor in a situation, but trust me, it’s usually there. Finding it is well worth the trouble – laughter is good for the heart and mind. It is one reason I love working with children: laughter comes naturally to them.
Seven keys to a successful school year! This list is not exhaustive, but it is a good way to help hit the ground running as we start the school year.
MAP Testing - The 9th and 10th grade students successfully completed their MAP tests on Sunday & Wednesday, with an adjusted schedule that ran smoothly and without disruptions. Simultaneously, the 11th and 12th graders engaged in productive college-related activities led by Ms. Kurdi, making significant progress in their preparations for post-secondary education. Both events will be repeated again in the second semester with a similar format.

College Counseling Program
This week, our juniors were busy exploring MaiaLearning, where they completed an Interest Profiler to discover career matches, reflected on their results in journals, and began adding careers to their personalized lists and plans. Encourage them to share what surprised them, what felt like a good fit, and which attributes they’ve chosen to focus on as they start connecting their strengths to future opportunities. They also engaged in a session entitled “How Can I Shine?” which encouraged them to think about their strengths and interests both in and out of the classroom and about how this will be reflected in their applications next year. They enjoyed a highly interactive session in their cohorts entitled “Do I Need to Know My Major?” which encouraged them to start thinking of their current academic interests and how that relates to college programs across the globe.
Our seniors have officially begun filling out the CommonApp and will continue to do so during some FLEX sessions in the coming weeks. Most students are finalizing essays and shaping well-balanced college lists, which they are discussing in individual meetings with Ms. Ruba. We’ll continue building on this momentum in the months ahead as they prepare their applications. Also, seniors were reminded to start the scholarship application process early. US citizens are reminded to fill out the FAFSA.
Junior and senior families, got any college questions? Ask Ms. Kurdi directly (rkurdi@acsamman.edu.jo), or schedule a meeting by emailing Ms. Ellen (ehindeleh@acsamman.edu.jo).
Social/Emotional Counseling Program
Reminder About Teens and Sleep
While talking with students in classes and on-on-one, it is apparent that many of our high school students are not getting very much sleep. I know as seasoned parents you know this but here is a reminder that teens need between 8-10 hours of sleep per night to stay physically healthy, mentally focused, and emotionally balanced. Getting this sleep can be particularly challenging because the natural changes in teen body clocks often make them feel more awake later at night and they may struggle with early school mornings.
I cannot emphasize enough that lack of sleep can affect mood, learning, memory, and even physical health. Parents can help by encouraging consistent bedtimes, limiting late-night screen use, and creating a calm evening routine. Supporting healthy sleep habits now sets teens up for success in school and overall well-being.
One pattern that seems common is that teens stay up very late, get up early for school, and then take a long nap in the afternoon. While families need to make the behavioral health choices that work well for their families, limiting naps to 30 minutes ensures naps are restorative rather than disruptive to their overall sleep schedule.

We will be communicating more information regarding AP exams registration and fees on the week of September 14th.

September University Visits
University visits have begun! We had our first official visitor from Northeastern University, which attracted a big crowd of juniors and seniors. We have lots more visits lined up in September, and you can visit our College Counseling website for the most up-to-date visits schedule as well as a lot more college information.
Learning and Bonding
In between academic advising sessions with Ms. Kurdi, grade 10 and 11 students had a chance to engage in some friendly cross-cohort competition during our first annual Connect Four tournament. Grades 11 and 12 no longer take the MAP tests so during that allotted time, they had a combination of peer bonding time and post-secondary learning and preparation.

New Uniforms. New Energy. New Season
Big things are coming to ACS Activities! We’re revamping our uniform policy to make sure our student-athletes represent ACS with pride, on and off the court.
The highlight? The all-new ACS Travel Hoodie, designed exclusively by JoBedu. It’s bold, it’s sleek, and it’s something our athletes will wear with pride wherever they compete.
To make it even more special, we’ll be celebrating with a Uniform Celebration & Media Day! Students will receive their new gear, get professional photos taken, and be featured on ACS social media, showing off their team spirit and the pride of representing our school.
